Jan Philip Steitz
Welcome to my website. I am a fourth-year PhD student in Economics at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and I am on the 2026–2027 job market.
My research interests are in public economics, economic history, and labor economics. I am particularly interested in state and local taxation, fiscal federalism, interjurisdictional tax competition, the historical development of the American tax system, and immigration.
My job market paper, Raise Fast, Cut Slow: Asymmetric Reversal of Recession-Driven State Tax Increases, shows that recessions raise the probability of a state tax increase while recoveries produce no offsetting cuts, and that increases enacted in recessions are then cut sooner and more often than those enacted in normal times.
You can find my CV here, and my research here.
